Modesty & humility
Modesty and humility are cornerstones of our faith, guiding how we present ourselves, work together and engage with the world around us.
Humility and modesty are key attributes to life in the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church. Peter 5:5 calls for believers to be “clothed with humility,” and that idea shapes how church members present themselves every day.
In terms of dress, Brethren men and women choose to present themselves modestly. Men typically wear long pants and collared shirts, keep their hair short, and are clean-shaven. Women generally wear skirts or dresses and keep their hair longer. These choices reflect a commitment to honor God in everyday life, including in how members carry themselves in public.
Whether in business, community life, or faith, members are encouraged to live modestly, put others first, and make decisions collaboratively: in the home, in the workplace, and within the church community.
The emphasis is on shared responsibility and mutual respect rather than individual recognition.
The Plymouth Brethren community believes in the importance of displaying our values through consistent and thoughtful actions.
As Plymouth Brethren faith teaches, the goal is to live a life that honors God and serves others well.
Our values
Family & Community
Strong families and close community bonds are at the heart of Plymouth Brethren life. We believe that nurturing family relationships creates resilient communities, with values passed between generations forming the foundation of how we live. Beyond the immediate family, our wider fellowship provides a supportive network where members care for one another through life’s challenges and opportunities.
Business & Entrepreneurship
Whilst the Church itself does not own or operate businesses, our members have a proud tradition of entrepreneurship stretching back to the Industrial Revolution. Today, member-owned businesses operate across virtually every sector of the British economy, creating thousands of jobs, contributing significant tax revenues, and building lasting relationships with local suppliers and communities.
