Technology and Entertainment
A considered approach to technology.
The relationship between the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and technology has evolved significantly over the years. Brethren members today use computers, laptops, smartphones, and the internet much like anyone else in the United States and around the world.
Brethren technology use spans all areas of daily life: at school, at work, and at home.
OneSchool Global, the independent school network attended by younger church members, with more than 8,000 students across more than 120 campuses in 20 countries is built around technology-rich classrooms.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the church held daily worship services over Zoom, demonstrating just how central digital tools have become in community life.
Brethren members are thoughtful about how technology is used, particularly when it comes to entertainment.
Television watched purely for entertainment is generally avoided, as members prefer to keep their focus on faith, family, and community rather than screen-based content.
However, some members do watch news programs or factual documentaries online, and many use streaming services selectively. The preference for filtered, intentional content isn’t unique to the Plymouth Brethren, and we do prefer to limit screentime at home.
Music is an important and much-loved part of Brethren life, with many members being skilled singers and musicians. Music brings joy and connection across the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church and our members have shared their love of live music through the Voices of Brethren series.
Brethren families invest their time in things that bring them together, such as hosting friends and family at home, making music, cooking, volunteering with the Rapid Relief Team, and gathering daily at local church halls for worship and fellowship.
