What is the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church?

The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is a mainstream Christian Church with origins in Britain and Ireland in the 1820s.

We are a community of Christians who live according to Christian principles and support one another in faith and daily life. The church has congregations in villages, towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom and across the world. 

Why was the Church called “Exclusive Brethren”?

Exclusive Brethren was a name given to our community by sections of the media due to our commitment to deliberate fellowship with those directly in our church community.

While this name became widely used by those outside of the community, it is not an accurate representation of our Church. Our official name is the Plymouth Brethren Christian Church, which accurately reflects our identity as a Christian community.

We live and work harmoniously with our neighbours and our work colleagues. We seek to contribute to the communities we live in and work in each day with care and compassion.

Is the Plymouth Brethren a cult?

No. The Plymouth Brethren Christian Church is a mainstream Christian denomination holding historic Christian beliefs.

The term “Brethren cult” appears in some online searches, but this characterisation is inaccurate and often reflects outdated information or misunderstanding. Like any community, we have practices that might differ from other faiths, but difference does not in any way equate to “cult.”

Are Plymouth Brethren allowed to interact with non-members?

Absolutely. Plymouth Brethren members live and work side by side with people from all walks of life throughout the UK.

Throughout our daily lives, we work alongside non-member colleagues, do business with non-member customers and suppliers, shops at stores within our local neighbourhoods, and live as neighbours in communities across the country.

Our members also take an active role within their local communities, including by engaging with charitable work to support their neighbours and wider society.

Do Plymouth Brethren pay taxes?

Yes. As with any other private citizens, Plymouth Brethren members pay all applicable UK taxes, income tax, corporation tax, VAT, council tax, and all other duties and levies. There is no special tax exemption for Plymouth Brethren individuals or businesses.

Like many other religious organisations, our Church has charitable status, but individual members pay taxes exactly as any other British citizen.

What are “Plymouth Brethren rules”?

The phrase “Plymouth Brethren rules” suggests we operate by a strict rulebook. In reality, our community is guided by Biblical principles, not formal rules.

We have shared convictions about how to live as Christians, including on topics related to modesty, family life and worship. However, these are derived from our understanding of Scripture and are applied with wisdom in individual circumstances. Different members may make different choices within these principles.

As with other Protestant Christian traditions, the emphasis is on individual responsibility, not rules imposed by a clergy.

What is the Rapid Relief Team?

The Rapid Relief Team (RRT) is a charitable organisation operated by Plymouth Brethren members.

The RRT has served in numerous UK emergencies and is well-regarded by emergency services and councils for its speed, organisation, and genuine care.

What is OneSchool Global?

OneSchool Global is an independent school network that provides education for Plymouth Brethren students through campuses across the United Kingdom.

OneSchool Global delivers quality education, delivered by professional educators and experts from outside of our Church community, which is aligned with the national curriculum while supporting the values-based approach that Plymouth Brethren families seek.

Students at OneSchool Global achieve strong academic results and are well-prepared for further education and careers.

Can anyone attend a Plymouth Brethren service?

Our congregations hold gospel meetings which visitors can attend.

In line with safety practices for many places of worship, please contact us first if you are interested in visiting a Gospel Hall.

What happens if someone leaves the Church? 

While uncommon, sometimes a member may decide that our way of life no longer aligns with their personal journey. In such instances, while we feel a sense of loss, we extend our best wishes to them.

The Church does not obstruct members who choose to leave or prevent contact between former members and their families. The nature of ongoing family relationships would remain a personal matter for the individuals involved. 

Do members vote? 

Historically, our membership often refrained from voting due to deeply held personal convictions. 

However, over time, we are aware that more of our members now choose to vote in elections, as is their democratic right. 

Does the Church support political parties? 

No. The Church has no history of, nor does it currently engage in, making financial donations to political parties. 

Should individual members develop an interest in political matters and decide to support a specific politician or cause, that is a personal decision made at their sole discretion.
